Lyssa Pelton (violin)

BMus (Thompson Rivers University/GGS), Performance Diploma (GGS), Artist Diploma (GGS)

Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Lyssa Pelton began violin at age eight with Michelle Stewart and later Rachel Handman. There she studied at the Stringendo Orchestra School of the Hudson Valley and performed with the Strawberry Hill Fiddlers. After moving to Toronto, Lyssa studied with Marie Bérard at The Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music for six years.

Lyssa graduated from The GGS in May 2015 after completing both the Performance Diploma and Artist Diploma programs, gaining her BMus through correspondence with TRU. While a student at The GGS, Lyssa worked with artists Zubin Mehta, Johannes Debus, Anton and Julian Kuerti, Uri Mayer, Peter Oundjian, Sir Roger Norrington, both Afiara and Cecilia String Quartets, Stephen Sitarski, and Jonathan Crow, to name a few. During the summers of 2011 and 2012, Lyssa took part in the orchestral program at Banff’s Summer Music Festival in Alberta, and later attended the St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar at Stanford University in 2013 with her quartet, Wolfgang.

Lyssa won first place in the 2007 Stringendo Competition, and the Virtuoso in Progress (VIP) Competition in 2009, both including several concerto performances with the Orchestra School and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. She played multiple roles in The Adra String Quartet, who was a finalist in the 2009 St. Paul String Quartet Competition. During the same year, the group was also awarded Best Interpretation of a 20th Century Piece after performing Bartok’s 4th String Quartet as part of New York University’s String Quartet Seminar Competition. Lyssa toured the UK and the US with the Strawberry Hill Fiddlers, getting to perform alongside Natalie MacMaster, Jay Ungar, and Swedish fiddle band, Väsen. She also recorded three albums with the group from 2005 to 2009.

Since graduating, Lyssa has won the position of Acting Assistant Concertmaster with the Kingston Symphony Orchestra (Kingston, ON). She also performs regularly with the Toronto Symphony and Hamilton Philharmonic, and is Principal Second Violin with the Etobicoke Philharmonic. Notable performances include New Creations Festival 2016 with the Toronto Symphony, the album release of Nudging Forever with jazz pianist Mike Jansen, and Godfather: Live with conductor Justin Freer at the Sony Centre. In addition to performing, Lyssa runs sectionals with the Etobicoke Philharmonic.
